3rd Nerban, 5436
Subject: Death

I suppose it was only a matter of time before we had to touch on this topic.

There’s been a lot of death in my past. There will be a lot in my future, I’m sure. People do not live forever, eventually, everyone dies. But some have affected me more than others. I shall try to be logical and not ramble on as I usually do.

Tarquin Marez - died 8th Brathos, 5373
Now, you might think it odd that the death of a man I never knew, on a date nine years before I was even born would have such a profound affect on me that I would include it in this list. But his death shaped my future, you see. My father had been part of a military task force that had been stationed on Feria, back before Gaillia became completely xenophobic. He met Tarquin Marez and became friendly with him.
Marez was a psionic, one of the first identified and part of the program that preceded PsyCorps. That program had one major, fatal flaw. The government identified psionics and immediately threw them into the field, with only a basic military training. They did not know how to work as a team. They didn’t know how to control their own skills.
Marez died on a mission, and his death was completely avoidable. He died in my father’s arms. My father walked away from that mission scarred by that young man’s death. So, when I began to manifest psionic abilities, he sent me to Feria, to be trained, because he didn’t want me to die like Tarquin had, a victim of my own abilities.

Sera Micah - died 1st Penna, 5387
I have documented elsewhere in this journal about my mother’s death. She died protecting me. I heard her die. The events of that day will never fully fade from my memory.
My mother, my sister and brother along with all the others of the Sharshun Colony died because of bigotry and hatred. The so called “purebloods” of Gaillia had ostracized all those of mixed race, forced them from the homeworld to colonies on the outskirts of the sector, poorly defended and open to attack by races like the Slensta. The didn’t have to die that day.

Marhc Harisse - 5th Sesman, 5412
I could write facts here. There are plenty of facts on record about Barido.
Here is my opinion. No one had to die at Barido. Once it became clear that it was not a simple L’spi sounding station but a full base, we should have gotten back onto the Rain Dancer and hightailed it the hell out of there. But Mahrc Harisse was too proud to walk away from a mission. We were mis-manned, unprepared, ill-equipped and frankly, incapable of taking on that base.
And I watched him die, I watched him accept his death as the price of failure. I can forgive him for that. The thing I cannot forgive is that his hubris killed the rest of the team. I could list their names here, but I will not.

Joohlie Prinz - Sometime between 5th Sesman, 5412 and 11th Jursto 5432
Joolie never woke up from Cryo stasis. Her death, unlike others I know, was probably painless and peaceful. She never knew what happened.
I never got to say a lot of the things I wanted to say to Joohlie. She died while I was still angry with her. We were barely on speaking terms.

Chase Cam’ree - 20th Jursto, 5435
Am I ready to talk about Chase’s death? No. Do I need to? Yes, probably.
I feel rage. He was taken from me. He died when I needed him. I needed him when the L’spi came. I needed him when Conah was born.
I need him.
Am I able to talk about Chase’s death?
No.
