Subject: Something Someone did for Me
When you assigned me this one, Doctor Ellie, I presume you didn’t want to know about the breakfast Hauck left on my desk or the new boots Bailey found down in stores to replace the ones that had holes in them.
I’ll write this down, but I don’t really want to talk about it when we meet. You said you would honor that request. I’m going to write this and then I’m going to go and find Chase and sit in his lap and maybe have myself a good cry and I’m going to blame you for making me think about this.
The biggest thing anyone ever did for me, without exception was when I was five years old. My mother gave her life to save mine.
She could have run, she could have taken me by the hand and run and we might even have made it to the spaceport. But instead, she took the time to find a blanket and wrap me in it, like a cocoon. Then she splashed lamp oil over the blanket to mask the scent of child. She had to fight with the cupboard door to get it open, I remember that clearly. She sat on the floor and braced both feet to either side of the door and pulled until it opened wide enough for me to crawl through.
The space there wasn’t large enough for her to fit. My older brother wouldn’t even have fit, it was was quite a small space, a disused storage area, abandoned because of the sticky door.
Mama kissed my mouth and my forehead and hugged me. She told me that she loved me and that I needed to be quiet and not move around and wait there until I heard people talking, people searching the house, because that would mean the Slesta were gone. She didn’t bother to promise me that my Da would come, I guess she wasn’t sure that he would be able to, unsure that he would make it through either.
Then she made me go into the cupboard. “I love you, Katrin,” was the last thing she said to me. They weren’t her last words, but they were the last she spoke quietly, to me.
I waited in the dark and I heard her move a trunk in front of the door to hide it. She had told me she was going to do that. I heard her calling out for my brother and sister. Not long after, I heard the Slesta come and I heard the screaming start. There was weapons fire, my mother tried to defend herself and my brother.
I was in the dark cupboard for a long time before Da came and pulled me out. He tried to hide my face when he carried me from the house, but he was too late, I had seen. I never had any illusions about my mother coming back, or my brother or my sister. I saw their bodies, I saw what the Slesta had done to them, I knew they were dead.
If my mother had not taken the time to hide me, I know that one of two probables would be true:
We all might have made it to the spaceport and safety. I don’t know, I was never able to find out if anyone from the colony did make it.
or
I too would have been dead, my body a shredded and bloody mess left for my Da to find somewhere in the house after the massacre was over.
I have always taken comfort in the knowledge that my mother knowingly sacrificed time, sacrificed herself and possibly my brother and sister to save me, because I was the only one she could save.
I think that I would do the same for my own children, under the same circumstances.
