“What’s wrong with you, Ranil?”

“Nothing, Wrin Parr’ish.”

“Do not lie to me, telpa, I can see there’s something wrong.”

“It is merely a headache, Wrin, I am quite sure it will pass.”

“Come over here, stop dawdling girl, and get your ass over here.”

“Sassa Zoe and Laura said not to trouble you. You are supposed to sleep, Wrin.”

“On the table, get the green bottle.”

“This one?”

“Yes, I need to take some of that pain medication.”

“How much is a dose? Perhaps I should get Laura…”

“Two spoons. This isn’t a difficult task, telpa, I’m telling you what to do.”

“Two spoons?”

“Two helps me sleep. Now, you take a spoon of it too.”

“I…”

“Are you going to argue with me, Ranil?”

“No.”

“Good, that wasn’t so bad, now was it?”

“That tasted like hog piss!”

“You’ve had occasion to taste hog piss?”

“Uh…”

“Come over here. Closer, I won’t bite. Much.”

“I should get Laura.”

“No, just climb up here. Ooofff! Carefully.”

“I’m sorry, Wrin.”

“You just bounced the mattress a little. Now settle down. Close your eyes and let the medicine work.”

“I suppose I am tired.”

“Shhhh. Sleep, Ranil.”

~*~

“I found her, here she is, Lorne.”

“What the hell is she doing in bed with Wrin David?”

“Jealous, Lorne? Shhh, they’re both asleep.”

“Then let them sleep, it will do them both good. He hasn’t been sleeping at all.”

“He hasn’t? Even with the medication?”

“No. He tosses and turns, he says he can’t sleep.”

“You would know, I suppose. Well, he’s asleep now.”

“I’m awake and I hear you out there noisy Little Priestess! Stop hovering in doorways and tell Lorne to come fetch this wretched girl, she kicks in her sleep.”

“I could have told you that, Wrin, if you had asked. The girl still has nightmares; I’m surprised she didn’t wake from them. What possessed you to let her sleep here?”

“She looked ill and when I pressed her she admitted that she had a headache, I made her take medicine.”

“What kind of medicine? I really don’t think she should be taking something meant for you, Wrin.”

“Don’t lecture me, Little Priestess. The green bottle Sassa Zoe brought yesterday.”

“I wish you hadn’t done that… this could make her…”

“Make her what, Little Priestess?”

“I…”

“Out with it!”

“Well, I’m not, she’s not, we’re not exactly sure yet, but…”

“Stop chewing your lip and tell me!”

“We think she’s carrying.”

“Oh. Why didn’t anyone tell me? I AM the Wrin around here, aren’t I?”

“Don’t yell at Laura, Wrin David.”

“Don’t tell me what to do, Lorne.”

“You’re getting yourself upset, and the doctor said that is bad for you. So I will tell you what to do, when it comes to your health. Stop glaring at me, you know I’m right.”

“Impertinent telpa. I’m going to whip your ass when I get out of this bed.”

“And I will fetch the whip for you, if and when you’re well enough the wield it, and be glad for it too.”

“…”

“Wrin David, how much of this did you give her?”

“Just one spoon.”

“Calm down, Laura, it is an herbal elixir; one spoon shouldn’t do her any harm. Go ask Sassa Zoe about it, I’m sure if anyone knows, she will. They certainly birth enough babies around here.”

“Are you sure Lorne?”

“Of course I am. Go ask Zoe, put your mind at ease.”

“Do what Lorne says, Little Priestess, he’s obviously trying to get rid of you.”

~*~

“You knew about this?”

“I suspected. Ranil has been showing symptoms, nausea, headaches, soreness, irritability.”

“You should have told me.”

“Pouting does not become you, Wrin David. You have enough to worry about getting yourself well again. When we were sure, we would have told you.”

“I’ve never had a body telpa carrying before.”

“May I ask you a question, Wrin David?”

“Have I ever punished you for asking a question, Lorne?”

“No, but I need the honest answer. This situation has Ranil very out of sorts. She is not acting at all like herself. Laura and I think it has something to do with the death of the son she had with Wrin Beck’ett, the one that died. She is nervous and jumpy and having screaming nightmares.”

“What is your question?”

“Will you let her keep the baby? I fear taking the baby away from her might break her, Wrin David. I am worried for her sanity.”

“Do you think me that heartless?”

“You’re a Wrin, we’re telpa, and you’ll do what you want to do when the time comes. I don’t know anymore if you’re heartless or not. You have not been unkind to any of us since we came into your service. You’re almost…”

“Almost what, Lorne?”

“Sometimes, I think you actually care for us… care for me.”

“Of course I care, you’re mine.”

“You wouldn’t sell the baby away?”

“I wouldn’t sell any of you away! You really do think me that hard and cold, Lorne?!?”

“Please calm down, Wrin David. I didn’t mean to upset you. You’ll pull the stitches if you try to get out of the bed. Please, get back under the blankets.”

“You think I’m a monster.”

“I don’t.”

“If you didn’t, then you wouldn’t have asked me the question. You’d know I wouldn’t separate Ranil from the baby.”

“I wasn’t sure. The baby is mine too. What rights do I have, does Ranil have? That baby is your property, just as we are.”

“You’ve never complained about being a telpa before, Lorne.”

“I never had reason to. I never thought I’d have reason to. Wrina Emma’gen branded me sterile. If Laura and Raina hadn’t sworn an oath that I was the only one she had been with, I would still believe that to be true.”

“What do you want me to do, Lorne?”

“What difference does it make? I’m a telpa; I have no right to make demands of a Wrin.”

“What do you want me to do, Lorne?”

“Let Ranil keep the baby, please, Wrin David.”

“Would that make you happy?”

“…”

“Lorne? Would that make you happy?”

“I suppose that it would, if I was able to stay in the Bardero and be near the child.”

“Do you care for Ranil?”

“I do.”

“If you had your freedom, would you take her away somewhere?”

“That would make her very unhappy, she loves Laura. I would not be happy away from Bardero Parr’ish.”

“Are you in love with her?”

“No. I care for her as a very good friend.”

“I see.”

“Do you, Wrin David?”

“I am very sleepy, Lorne, I will talk to you later.”

“Sleep well, Wrin David.”

“I shall try. You have given me much to think about today.”
